Many don’t understand the concept behind meeting your favorite singer or actor, some may think it is pointless, a waste of money, others may believe meeting VIPs is overrated, and it can ruin the perception and the idea one may have of them.

However, for many young people, especially between the age of 14 to 25, following celebrities can be extremely fulfilling it can give them a sense of accomplishment and complete happiness. I know because this is how I felt when I used to meet my favorite VIPs.

I have personally met over 50 celebrities in the last years, I’ve encountered my first celebrity, the American actor, DJ, and model, Ansel Elgort when I was 15. I remember browsing on Twitter and seeing pictures of him in London, I then discovered he was attending a press conference in Regent’s Street.

At the time I used to live in Essex, and not knowing whether it was fake news or not, I remember making my way to Central London. After hanging around the venue for a couple of hours, I managed to take a picture with him and have a few words.

From that moment on, something sparkled in me and I spent my remaining teenage years following celebrities, going to concerts, and making friends through celebrity fandoms. In my opinion, these were the best years of my life.

Most of the celebrities I had the pleasure to meet were outside concert venues, hotels, and radio stations. The waiting can go up to days! I found myself camping out hotels and radio stations all night, just to be able to get that front row spot.

The process of finding out where a celebrity is quite easy yet complicated, I would say social media is a fundamental tool to use when researching a VIP, from pictures to videos, to Twitter users posting a celebrity’s location in real-time, it’s always about being quick even if the location may be wrong.

There is something so beautiful and mesmerizing about meeting celebrities it is so difficult to put into words.

On the other hand, some celebrities I have met throughout the years were disappointing. In some cases, time is the main factor influencing their moment with their fans, if the celebrity is late for an appointment and cannot waste time, for instance.

A disappointing meeting I had was with singer Jason Derulo, he looked like he was not enjoying himself and was blunt to all interactions with fans.

Meeting my favorite singers and actors always made me feel closer to them. However, sometimes fans do forget that celebrities are normal people just like me and you.

I spoke to different fans and they shared their experiences and opinions about meeting celebrities and how they feel. Fabio Magnocavallo is a young student in London passionate about fashion, music, and entertainment writing.

Fabio met over 100 celebrities, his interest varies from actors, singers, and public personas. When asked about the process of finding celebrities Fabio says:

"Once I know they’re in my city, I would keep an eye out on radio / TV scheduled and look at their updates on social media"
Fabio Magnocavallo

Social Media plays an important role within the celebrity community. Fabio then talks about why he enjoys meeting celebrities,

"I enjoy meeting celebrities I like because it’s nice to meet the person I’m supporting and investing my time and money in.
Fabio Magnocavallo
"It’s always nice when you meet someone you’ve been a fan of for a long time and they end up being the person you hoped they’d be. On occasion, you meet celebrities who don’t appear to be as nice and that doesn’t always leave a good impression on you."
Fabio Magnocavallo

Fabio then continues to share a celebrity who wasn't pleasant

Jess Glynne wasn’t pleasant to fans. She had a very stand-off vibe even though she still stopped. It was clear that the fans are supporters of her but she still didn’t care.

Some fans may end up waiting hours and hours, Fabio says he would wait a good number of hours, however not all day,

It is only worth it when the celebrity appreciates the efforts and support.

Superfan Francesco Basile is 26 years old living in London, he shared his experience and secrets behind meeting celebrities. Francesco has met over 30 celebrities, he is very passionate about music and most of the celebrities he has encountered are famous singers.

Usually, it is quite easy to catch the person you are interested in when that specific celebrity is out and about doing promotion. If for instance, we are talking about music artists, radio stations are the go-to places in order to meet them, they usually visit a bunch of them over a short period of time.
Francesco Basile

He then continued to share some more tips about discovering the location:

Following on social media co-workers or members of the team around that celebrity, can give away their specific location and that will undoubtedly help.
Francesco Basile

Francesco has a strong passion for the creative industries, he in fact pursued a degree in the music management business. He says it's due to this passion of his, meeting celebrities is something he always looked forward to,

Curiosity and a deep unconditional love for that artist made me want to get up and try my best to meet that person. Afterwards, I managed to gather correct information and meet the first real celebrity, things got easier and I got to know the process on how to meet one.
Francesco Basile

Francesco then goes on and shares his feeling and emotions. From his experience he confessed there are three different stages of emotions going through his head:

Before meeting someone I usually feel stressed, anxious and tired, depending on how long I am waiting for that person. When it comes to the actual meeting, usually there is an overwhelming excitement, joy, happiness and also awkwardness if that celebrity is not particularly talkative.
Francesco Basile
After meeting celebrities there are also two possible outcomes, have a sense of happiness, satisfaction from the meeting, when the celebrity matched the expectations you had and was very kind to you. It also goes right on the opposite way when you are meeting someone who turned out to be really rude, did not want to stop with fans, which usually ruins the whole experience
Francesco Basile

However, meeting celebrities isn't always as it seems, Francesco opens up to some disappointing experiences

Singer Jessie J. I haven’t met personally her, but hearing stories from friends, she actually never stops or rarely engages with fans waiting outside for her. That of course influences how people then perceive the artist, with word of mouth, the word can spread and can cause damage to the listeners if the artist herself is considered ‘rude’.
Francesco Basile

Francesco says the longest he had been waiting for a celebrity is up to 4/5 days. Not 24/7 but he would go to the venue (hotel, radio stations, concert venues), every day up until he has the chance to meet them.

When you are a real fan of someone, at some point in your life, you start wondering how that person is in real life and how exciting it would be to meet an idol of yours.

What is a Celebrity "Idol"?

"An idol can be a religious image or a person who people admire and maybe even seem to worship"
English Vocabulary

In this case, we will be focusing on celebrity Idols. There are various reasons why people, especially young people, idolize, follow and want to know more about someone, whom they consider to be celebrities.

They tend to admire, idolize and worship celebrities because they are considered important, powerful, and famous.

Celebrities appear on the media, which allows us to peek into their lives. They seem to live a different and more interesting lifestyle than ours, or so the media makes us think.

There is a subconscious desire in the human race to idolize anything that seems better, greater, richer, well known, or powerful.

Most people have an unconscious desire to be famous and popular, even if they do not admit it openly. When they adore people, who are famous and popular, they feel that they associate with them, and are a part of their lives.

Some of us want to live a better life and reading about celebrities, watching them on TV, or following them on Instagram and other social networks, makes us feel that we are participating and taking part in their glory. We feel close to them as if they are our friends, and this gives us a good feeling.

There are people, who imitate their idols, wear the same kind of clothes, use the same perfume, or try to behave and act as they do. This gives them the feeling of being close to their idols, and take part in their fame and glory.

My Idol Ariana Grande

The singer, actress, and producer Ariana Grande hold a special place in my heart. She has been my idol and my number one since I was 14 years old. Before becoming one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Ariana Grande used to star in the Nickelodeon show “Victorious” as Cat Valentine.

There is something about her that caught my attention. Her voice is absolutely incredible, her music and lyrics are dreamy! I just have so much unconditional love for her and everything that she does.

After meeting her for the first time I wanted to meet her again as I felt pure joy the first time around. As mentioned above by myself and the fans, social media plays an important role within this industry, that is what I would rely on to find out where she was.

I was lucky enough to have met her eight times and have five photos with her, once in 2016 she had been staying in London for one week, I remember not going to school but going to central London instead and meet her as many times as possible, it got to the point where she knew my name and who I was.

I had the pleasure to have a chat with Sean Halliman. Sean's idol is the singer, model, actress, and writer Lady Gaga.

"My number one is Lady Gaga, I have meet her five times and I have five photos with her, but I have meet her a few more times on the additional occasion when she is leaving from her hotel and she walks past us to say hi. I am quite lucky.
Sean Halliman

Sean explains in details why he fell in love with Lady Gaga in the first place,

"I fell in love with her because she is so unique, eye catching and her music and lyrics touched me."
Sean Halliman

Sean explained how he met his idol for the first time, back in 2009 Lady Gaga had a perfume launch at Harrods Store in London. To win the chance to meet her, fans had to buy the new fragrance "The Fame" and enter the contest.

I entered the competition, they announced the winners a couple of weeks later, at first because I hadn't heard anything I though it wasn't meant to be, however one week later I got an email from Harrods saying I had won and I couldn't believe it!
Sean Halliman

Sean went to Harrods with his lucky plus one, the meeting was set up as a tea party with roughly 30 people.

Suddenly she came down the stairs and everyone around me stopped, I couldn't believe it, it took me a while to realise that was really Lady Gaga. We then all sat in a round table with her.
Sean Halliman

After his first encounter with superstar Lady Gaga, Sean had the desire to meet her again, at first, he was new to it and wasn't sure how to find out where she could be. The first thing he did was make a Twitter account,

On Twitter, I saw that she was in London and someone had tweeted she was staying at a hotel in Marble Arch. One day after school I made my way to the hotel, to see if she was there, however on that occasion she wasn't. I then saw someone else tweeting another location and she happened to be there.
Sean Halliman

I then asked Sean how he feels when his idol is in a rush and may not be able to greet fans outside hotels and other venues,

Luckily since I have been going to her hotel she has stopped for some fans, usually, security places two barries at each side of the hotel and she would stop for around five people or so on each side, as many as she can do.
Sean Halliman
I went to 4 Lady Gaga concerts, I was meant to go to Las Vegas to see her last year but unfortunately COVID happened and I couldn't anymore.
Sean Halliman

I then asked how much did Sean invest in Lady Gaga and if it was worth it,

The origins of Celebrity and Worshipping Culture

Modern celebrity culture did not begin with Hollywood, nor the internet, but in the 18th century, when the modern terms “celebrity” and “star” first became widespread.

Celebrities are considered people who were known during their lifetimes to more people than one could possibly know, for many centuries, rulers and conquerors were the primary celebrities.

Only in the 18th century did the publics begin to take a strong interest in a large number of living authors, artists, performers, scientists, and politicians.

By the 18th century, a host of performers and authors had stalkers and groupies; by the 19th century, many received hundreds of letters yearly requesting autographs.

A century before the rise of radio and television commercials, celebrities endorsed wigs, face creams, powders, pianos, and bottled water.

Celebrity culture would not have taken off without newspapers; journalists were able to use an already existing interest with celebrities to attract more readers and make more profit.

Until the 1830s, newspapers in England, France, and the United States were expensive publications, sponsored by wealthy patrons and read by a small, selected group of subscribers, who were more likely to be wealthy and rich.

This changed in the 1830s, the news became more commercial and accessible. To increase circulation and to reach a wider audience, publishers began to charge readers only a penny instead of the traditional six cents and began to rely on advertisements, subscriptions, and daily sales, including street sales, to turn a profit.

Newspapers were so identified with celebrities that in 1841 it began to promote stars and give them the exposure they needed to become more recognized.

According to a journalism student in 1912, a US newspaperman explained,

“In publishing a newspaper you endeavour to print what the people want to read.”

The people wanted to read about celebrities. In turn, celebrities themselves became aware of the power of the press, even arguing with editors about their coverage.

In the following years, celebrity culture kept developing as the public did, in the 19th century, the public became obsessed with theatre, as more and more stars made their appearances and became recognized.

In the following century, Hollywood and films became the next best thing.

The breakdown of broadcast television that began in the 1980s, and the rise of the Internet since the 1990s have returned celebrity culture to its more anarchic 19th-century roots.

The Power of Social Media and Micro-Celebrities

Celebrity Culture is always changing, developing, and discovering new ways to keep up with its audience. Nowadays the main medium used to connect and to provide information about celebrities is social media.

Social media allows fans to know where their favorite celebrities are, what they are doing, and just about anything else you could possibly want to know.

Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok make celebrities accessible to their loyal fanbase and to the general population.

As mentioned above, fans found themselves scrolling through Twitter or Instagram to research where celebrities are or what event they may attend.

However, social media platforms are not just used by fans to keep up with celebrities and vice versa, social media platforms are seeing used by smaller celebrities and businesses to promote their talent or upcoming projects. Smaller social media celebrities are usually referred to as “micro-celebrities”.

Micro-celebrities construct an image to be consumed by peer users on social media, thus attracting them as a fan base and followers. Social media platforms are coded environments where the popularity measure incites ordinary users to conduct self-expression and self-representation practices.

To understand the characteristics of social media celebrities, we should attend to compare “Traditional Celebrities” and “Social Media Celebrities”, traditional celebrities tend to establish a sense of authenticity through the interactive representation of their intimate and private life, they adopt affiliative techniques to show equality and commonality with fans.

The complete opposite can be seen on social media celebrities because authenticity becomes a genre of content instead of an effect, micro-celebrities tend to show more about their life and what they do to attract more fans and followers.

Lastly, traditional celebrities keep a distance from their audience. What is new for social media celebrities is the ability to maintain engagement with audiences continuously.

These differences are given as an idea and explanations that there is a different type of celebrities out there and the power of social media, by creating content and being active on all platforms, people who dream to become singers or actors become reality without auditioning or traveling to Hollywood.

I spoke to micro-celebrity singer Carla Prata, she has a well-known Instagram platform with around 155K followers.

Carla Prata is 21 years old from London. I had the pleasure to meet her when she wasn't as known and famous as now, she is very shy and humble, I absolutely adored this about her.

When asked about the social media platforms she confessed

It’s the best way we know to connect and reach as many people possible. Personally, I don’t like to share too much of my personal life on socials but it's been the biggest tool I use to promote my music.
Carla Prata

She talked about one of her biggest accomplishments

My biggest accomplishment has been performing on COLORS STUDIO. As I have quite a big audience on my social media I have no doubt it helped reach the COLORS team.
Carla Prata

COLORS STUDIO is a platform for non-ordinary talents that showcases it from all around the globe, with 1 million followers on Instagram it focuses on the most distinctive new artists and original sounds.

Carla's next project called "SEX TAPE" is coming out very soon and I assure you it is worth your time! Her music and sounds are incredible.

"It’s always a good feeling to have people recognize the effort and time you put into something. I’m very shy and reserved so it may seem like I’m not fazed but I love meeting fans, whether it’s in McDonald’s or after a show."

I spoke to celebrity photographer Neil Mockford who works for Getty Images. Neil had been working as a celebrity photographer for 20 years for a variety of agencies and publications.

His work took him all around the world from Hollywood to Dubai, St Tropez to Ibiza.

In this time, I have photographed a wide variety of celebrities and famous figures including Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, David Beckham, and Barack Obama.
Nail Mockford

As a celebrity photographer do fans make your job easier or harder?

I would say easier. The majority of the celebrities I now photograph are here in London promoting their new single or movie, attending film premieres or radio interviews. A lot of the time the celebrities will take time to meet their fans, posing for photos and signing autographs. This often gives me more opportunities for photographs and shows a different side to the celebrity than that that portrays posing on a red carpet.
Neil Mockford

What is your opinion about celebrities meeting and not meeting fans?

I think it’s up to the individual celebrity and the situation they are in. Time constraints, security, or safety worries all make the decision for them and so it’s difficult to tell how they really feel. Also, often a large amount of ‘fans’ outside a venue may be selling these autographs and repeating asking for more at multiple times and places during a promotional trip - which annoys some celebrities, their security, and management.
Neil Mockford

How do you feel when you see fans posted outside the celebrity location?

I personally don’t mind seeing fans and as I’ve said earlier, this might be a reason why the celebrity might be happier to be photographed. The fans often know a lot more about the celebrities than the photographers due to following them on social media or from previous meetings - so I’m not surprised to see them. I think if everyone respects each other’s space and reasons for them being there then everyone can get what they want from the occasion. Again, fans who sell on these autographs and often then pursue the celebrity do cause problems for photographers as it can create uncomfortable atmospheres.

The Psychology Behind Meeting Celebrities

A fair amount of research points to issues surrounding the self and needs as reasons for fascination with celebrities. Research shows that some people may be attracted to celebrities to help the chronic feelings of inadequacy or emotional distress.

Such people can be described as suffering from what psychologist Phillip Cushman called, the “Empty” Self. Other people, however, may gravitate toward celebrities as part of a more normal human need to seek out, form, and maintain social connections. This type of behavior is what can be called the “social” self.

Author and psychologist Lynn McCutcheon and his colleagues have developed a theory of celebrity worship that describes behaviors motivated by both the empty self and social self.

According to McCutcheon and his colleagues, the mildest level of celebrity worship is the “entertainment – social” level, which can enhance social or entertainment activities. People enjoy discussing celebrities with their friends as part of everyday social interactions.

The second, and deeper, level is “intense – personal”, in which interest in celebrities is more obsessive. At this level, people show a greater preoccupation with celebrities than they normally should.

Finally, the deepest level, “borderline – pathological”, reflects more severe and pathological obsession and even leads to stalking and erotomania, the false belief that one has an actual relationship with a particular celebrity.

McCutcheon and his colleagues propose that interest in celebrities can be addictive and lead to increasing levels of preoccupation with celebrities in order to satisfy the addiction.

Indeed, research on the theory has strongly supported the prediction that deeper levels of celebrity worship are related to negative outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, and neuroticism, as well as poorer self-esteem and lower life satisfaction.

McCutcheon's theory clearly illustrates that for some people celebrity worship is motivated by normal social needs of the social self, but for others, it is driven by the desire to compensate for some inadequacy in the empty self.

I spoke to Dr. Ruth Sims psychology and ergonomics senior lecturer at the University of Derby about the matter, I asked her opinion about why young people want to meet their favorite celebrities,

I think there are a number of reasons why young people want to meet celebrities, I suppose is that so many celebrities nowadays are so out there in terms of social media, that way you can feel like you are part of their everyday life and I think that can be quite appealing to young people especially because most celebrities have a nice house and money.
Dr. Ruth Sims

Ruth then continues to express her opinions on how celebrities impact and affect young people's mental health,

Some celebrities are very supportive by being inclusive and share their personal experiences and issues they had with mental health. However, they are not trained counselors, that is not their job, so there is a limit to what they can do and I believe some celebrities do find themselves in that position where someone is direct messaging them and suddenly they wouldn't know what to do.
Dr. Ruth Sims
Celebrities are just people, so they are not necessarily going out of their way to promote or not promote mental health, most of them are just trying to promote their own brand, which is part of their work.
Dr. Ruth Sims

She then continues by sharing her opinion and views on "Celebrity Worship Syndrom"

To me, syndrome suggests there is something not ok, someone, who is heading down the obsession route.
Dr. Ruth Sims

I then asked Dr. Ruth Sims if she thinks fans like me who would wait and camp outside for hours to meet a celebrity have Celebrity Worship Syndrome,

If someone says, I'm sorry you are the cut off you can't get in, or something similar to that is all about how you are going to react, if you are going to be absolutely hysterical about it and your world just ended then I think there might be a little bit of an issue, if instead you are just a little disappointed and carry on with your life then I don't see an issue with that.
Dr. Ruth Sims

The future of Celebrity and Fandom culture

I asked Neil Mockford and Ruth Sims, the two experts where they think the future of celebrity and fandom culture will go moving forward.

I think the culture of celebrity and fandom is likely to remain much as it is now - social media and the internet are not 'going anywhere' and so the availability of information about celebrities, ability for fandoms to connect, etc are here to stay
Ruth Sims
In my opinion the effects of the pandemic will have a negative result on the future of the celebrity & fan relationship. Celebrities won't want to mix in large crowds and will limit their official in-person appearances, with more interviews carried out over Zoom or on the phone. The culture will become more virtual with interaction being on social media
Neil Mockford
